Testimonials

Bringing art to life

Don Peterson, an artist from Woolston, Christchurch, first approached Stu to get his help with some steelwork for a sculpture. That was twenty years ago and the two have been sharing ideas ever since.

“The different aspects between what I can do and what Stu does, I think it just takes it to another level of creativity,” Don says.

"Whatever I give Stu, it always comes back better than I imagined.”

Well-known for his art and sculpture around the country, including the iconic sculpture of painter and etcher Charles Meryon in Akaroa, Don has immense talent in hand and wax sculpting.

Don and Stu often meet throughout the creative process to go over the inspiration behind the latest work and to keep their ideas aligned.

“Stu is a pretty special man,” Don explains. “He’s hugely creative with steel.”

Don says he comes up with the original ideas and then Stu helps him create them – he says that no matter how unique the idea is, Stu’s approach is “right, let’s do it.”

“I said I wanted a big double bass. When I get the job back, he’s written music on it and curled the bottom of the strings up from the base. It just adds to my original idea of a head, hands and a pair of boots, which is why we can work so well together.”

When asked if he would recommend Studio Slade to anyone, Don laughs.
“Find someone else who can do this stuff...you can’t really.”

Luxury table creation

Christchurch couple Sue and Rob Webster were in America when they first saw a table that captured their hearts. After they returned home from their travels, they wondered whether it was possible to recreate it.

Owning a veneer and melamine board manufacturing business, Sue and Rob knew of Slade through the Christchurch trade industry. They knew the table could be made, it was just a matter of who could do it well.

“Sue and I were very impressed with Stu’s ability to interpret what we were trying to achieve from a few magazine pictures and very scant drawings,” Rob says.

“He applied his practical knowledge as to what needed to be done in terms of design and structure, to come up with the right outcome. We found the team at Slade friendly and accommodating and just a pleasure to work with.”

“It was the colour that drew us to the table [in America],” Sue adds.

“Stu was wonderful at coming up with the right colour, as we didn’t want it to be a steel colour but a brassy one. He did a few test runs with us because we really wanted to see that level of detail.”

Over the moon with the finished product, Sue and Rob paired their brassy table base with a walnut wooden top. The folded steel corners complete the dramatic look.

“We just love it. It’s just what we wanted,” Sue says.
